Helpful Advice - Hints and Tips

Where to Start

The first step to planning your kitchen is to find out how much floor space is available for you to work with. In order to do this, you will need to take accurate measurements of the overall length and width of your kitchen/dining area. Then on the scaled grid paper provided, sketch the outline of the area. Also, jot down the position of any objects that may affect the way in which you lay out the kitchen, e.g. doors, windows, radiators, plug points, piping, boilers etc.

When measuring the size of the kitchen, make sure that the exact shape of the walls is known. If there is an inwards corner in the room it will influence the shape of the worktop and the position of the wall-cabinets.

Mark the service points onto your plan, as this will define where the main working areas will be placed.

It is very important to use a qualified tradesman for installation of any gas or electrical objects. We can provide all registered trades men for these purposes if required.

Having an extractor fan requires access to an external wall, unless you wish to recycle.

Planning the Layout

In order to help you plan the layout of your kitchen, we have provided a planning grid that you can print, along with a wish list to achieve your desired kitchen to suit your needs. It is important that you note the height of any windows or ceiling including sloped ceilings. If possible include photographs showing any areas which may be difficult to explain on the grid.

Aesthetics

Once you have come up with the room layout, you can start looking at aesthetics. Think about doors handles, drawers, glass cabinets, feature linking cabinets, or any other additional features that you might wish to add in order to give your kitchen that stylish look.

- Magazines are a great source to get inspiration from.
- Keep a scrapbook of any cuttings of desired features.
- Explore different colours and materials.
- Look at finishes for walls and types for floor covering.
